Healing from Internalized Racism

Reclaiming your worth by shedding the weight of the world’s expectations.
For many of us, the first time we felt “different” wasn’t a choice; it was a reflection given to us by a world that didn’t always know how to value our brilliance. We grow up in a society that often filters Blackness through a lens of negative stereotypes, limited narratives, and narrow standards of beauty. Over time, these external messages can quietly settle in the back of our minds, turning into a silent, internal critic.
The silent echo of societal stereotypes
Internalized racism often shows up in the quietest ways. It might be the urge to over-explain yourself in certain spaces, the pressure to “code-switch” until you lose your own voice, or a lingering sense of doubt about your own capabilities. It can even manifest as a preference for things that distance you from your own culture or community.
These feelings often root themselves in childhood. When a child sees a world that consistently sidelines people who look like them, they might develop survival mechanisms that involve shrinking their identity to fit in. This isn’t a personal failure; it is a natural response to a systemic problem. But carrying these childhood wounds into adulthood creates a deep psychological distress that affects how we love, how we work, and how we see our future.
Deconstructing the “inner critic”
Healing begins when you start to separate your true self from the stereotypes you’ve been taught to believe. You are not the “strong Black person” who has to carry everyone’s weight without complaint. You are also not the caricatures often portrayed in the media.
To heal, you must actively challenge the thoughts that tell you that you aren’t enough. When that internal critic speaks up, ask yourself: Is this my voice, or is this a voice the world gave me? By identifying these thoughts as external “noise” rather than internal “truth,” you begin to create the space needed for a positive racial identity to grow.
Building a foundation of pride and peace
Building a positive racial identity is an active, ongoing process of surrounding yourself with narratives that celebrate the depth, diversity, and joy of the Black experience. You can support this journey by intentionally curating your environment, seeking out art, literature, and community spaces that consistently reflect your beauty and intelligence back to you.
As you navigate this, it is crucial to honor your lived experience by allowing yourself to feel anger, sadness, or joy without policing your emotions for the comfort of others. Unlearning years of conditioning takes time, so approach yourself with the same kindness and empathy you would offer a friend, practicing patience and self-compassion every step of the way.
