How to Read Your Body That Keeps the Score

Have you ever noticed your shoulders constantly resting near your ears, or a heavy tightness in your chest that you just cannot shake? Often, we believe we have moved past a difficult experience because we force ourselves to stop thinking about it. However, your mind might forget, but your body remembers.
In our communities, we frequently push through pain and exhaustion. We carry a heavy expectation to remain endlessly strong, often driven by cultural or faith influences. But when we ignore our emotional wounds, our physical bodies absorb that unexpressed stress. Learning how to read your body that keeps the score acts as a vital first step toward genuine healing.
Recognizing the physical signs of stress
Your body communicates with you constantly. When you experience trauma or prolonged stress, your nervous system can become stuck in high gear. This tension does not simply vanish; it stores itself in your muscles, your gut, and your resting heart rate.
You might experience unexplained headaches, relentless exhaustion even after a full night’s rest, or a stomach that constantly feels tied in knots. Sometimes, it looks like a racing heart when you simply sit still. These physical signals do not indicate weakness. They represent your body’s desperate attempt to tell you that it needs a break and craves safety.
Releasing the pressure to push through
Many individuals within the Black community face significant barriers to acknowledging these struggles, including the fear of judgment or a deep-rooted belief that we must quietly endure our hardships. We often mask our exhaustion with constant productivity.
You must give yourself permission to pause. You do not have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders every single day. Acknowledging that your body feels heavy or tired serves as a profound act of self-care. True empowerment means taking charge of your mental health and recognizing that you deserve gentleness and compassion.
Simple ways to tune in
Start by taking small, quiet moments to check in with yourself. Close your eyes and take a deep, slow breath. Ask yourself where you feel tension right now. Are your jaws tightly clenched? Is your breathing shallow?
You do not need to fix everything immediately. Simply noticing these physical sensations brings you back into the present moment. Gentle movement also helps release stored trauma. Take a quiet walk outdoors, stretch gently in your living room, or let your body sway to comforting music. Engaging with serene, natural spaces provides a powerful sense of calmness and restoration.
