Black and thriving

You’re not weak for feeling this way
Your feelings are valid. And you’re not alone.
Hey, I see you. I see the long hours, the constant pressure, and that weight you carry just to show up and prove yourself every single day. For us, being Black in the workplace often comes with extra stress, subtle bias, microaggressions, and feeling like you always have to overdeliver just to be noticed. It’s exhausting, and it can make you doubt yourself even when you’re doing everything right.
Take a breath, notice the signs
Burnout doesn’t always hit like a brick. Sometimes it creeps in quietly, a racing mind, sleepless nights, or that voice whispering “am I enough?” Anxiety and stress are real, and they’re not something you have to carry in silence.
Recognising what’s happening is the first step to taking care of yourself. And you deserve care without judgment, without pressure, and without having to “push through” just to survive.
Small steps matter
You don’t have to fix everything at once. Start small:
- Check in with yourself. Even five minutes of quiet reflection or deep breathing can reset your mind.
- Set boundaries at work. It’s okay to say no, to step back, to protect your energy.
- Lean on your community. Talk to colleagues, mentors, or friends who get it, who understand what it’s like to navigate work as a Black professional.
Every small action counts. Caring for yourself doesn’t make you less ambitious. It makes you stronger.
